Is Plinko legal in Canada?

Provincial rules, Ontario's regulated market, offshore crypto sites and taxes on winnings.

Provincial rules, ages and the deposit route for Canadian players.

This is general information, not legal advice. Provincial rules change; check the current position where you live.

The short answer

Playing Plinko for real money online is not a criminal offence for the player anywhere in Canada. The Criminal Code regulates who may operate gambling โ€” provinces and their agencies โ€” and does not target individuals playing at sites hosted elsewhere. Whether an operator is licensed to serve your province is a different question, and the answer varies.

Ontario

Since April 2022 Ontario has run a regulated open market through iGaming Ontario (iGO) and the AGCO. Operators licensed there are fully legal for Ontario residents. Offshore crypto casinos are not part of that regime; some choose to restrict Ontario players, others do not. Playing at one is not an offence for you, but you have no provincial regulator to complain to.

Other provinces

Every other province offers online gambling through its own lottery corporation (PlayNow in BC and Manitoba, Espacejeux in Quebec, PlayAlberta, Atlantic Lottery's site, and so on) and treats offshore sites as unlicensed but not illegal for players. Alberta has legislated toward an Ontario-style open market; timing and details are still developing. Quebec has attempted to block access to offshore sites in the past; the measure was struck down.

Age

19 in most provinces; 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Offshore sites generally require 18+ and rely on you to comply with local law.

Crypto

Buying and holding crypto is legal in Canada; exchanges are registered with FINTRAC. Using it to fund an offshore casino is not prohibited for individuals. Keep records โ€” see the tax section.

Taxes

Gambling winnings are generally not taxable for recreational players in Canada, because they are windfalls rather than income from a business. The exception is the professional gambler, which the CRA has applied very narrowly. Crypto adds a wrinkle: if the coin you withdraw rises in value before you sell it for CAD, that gain can be a taxable capital gain. Our tax explainer covers it.

Practical rules

  • Never use a VPN to access a site that restricts your province โ€” it breaches the terms and can void your balance.
  • Prefer operators with a published licence and long track record; our rating weights this.
  • Use the site's deposit limits, and the provincial help lines on our responsible gambling page if you need them.
